Why Salt Air Is Hard on Cheap Metal Roofs
A metal roof will usually outlast shingles, but on the coast the quality of the metal matters enormously. Here's what to ask before you choose one.

Metal handles wind well and generally lasts longer than shingle. But we’re on the coast, and salt air is unforgiving. Cheap metal rusts and discolors far sooner than the brochure suggests.
What to ask about
- The metal and coating being used, and whether it’s rated for coastal exposure.
- The fasteners and washers, which often fail before the panels do.
- How flashing at walls and penetrations will be handled.
Metal or shingle?
Metal costs more up front and takes longer to install. Shingle is faster and less expensive, and most shingle replacements finish in one day. We’ll give you a straight comparison for your house and budget during the free inspection.
Metal roof repair
Storms lift runs of panels, fasteners back out and washers dry-rot. Most of these are repairs, not replacements, and we quote them that way.
